WASH Workshops in schools during our board trip to Uganda

About the Project

To educate children about appropriate hygiene measures to prevent diseases, our RG Ndejje, Uganda, has developed a WASH workshop that can be piggybacked on school visits. As part of our board trip to Uganda, we held the workshop in three different elementary schools. The first WASH workshop took place at Ndejje Parents Community School in Ndejje and was excellently organized by RG Ndejje. The workshop was mainly held by our local members Irene, Hiram, Christine and Edwin, but our two Ghanaians, Nurudeen and Sylvester, also assisted with the implementation. They all showed that they are excellent teachers. The schoolchildren learned about important everyday hygiene practices in the workshop, such as washing their hands with soap and water especially before eating, after eating and after using the toilet. The correct use of sanitary facilities was also explained. To help with this, RG Ndejje prepared over a hundred shrink-wrapped cards with symbols and words for the schoolchildren to hold in their hands. With great skill, our team managed to keep the more than 100 pupils attentive throughout the training by constantly inviting them to move, clap and answer. We also supported the school with materials such as pens and exercise books, which we handed over at the end of the workshop. A second workshop was held at the STEM Primary School in Mpigi in front of around 400 pupils. Each member of our six-person team took on a part of the training and we managed to involve the large number of pupils well. Here too, a donation in the form of school materials was handed over at the end. During the tour of both schools, it was noticeable that only water canisters are available for washing, which makes it much more difficult to put the measures from the hygiene training into practice. Therefore, one possible project idea for the schools is the installation of a water tank with piping and a bio-sand filter to improve the water quality. As part of our visit to the Bubbebere orphanage, which we will report on in a separate article, our now well-established team conducted another WASH workshop at the associated Hubert Schwarz School, which was very successful despite being organized at very short notice. In conclusion, it can be said that the WASH workshop can be easily incorporated into school visits. Nurudeen and Sylvester are planning to take the project to the Ghanaian regional groups and extend the workshop to schools in Ghana.
