Update: 23rd October

It is 9 pm and we have just discussed our plan for the following days. We, that are Annika, Timo and me (Martin). We are sitting in front of the guest house at the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, which will be our home for the next 10 days. But first I should explain what happened so far.

Almost a year ago I started to look for a project in Ghana. It should not be a normal project. According to my study plan I have time to go abroad, make experiences now. The result is a project to generate sustainability, to teach my knowlege about project management and therby help Ghanaian ToeG members to realise projects independently. But I have never been to Africa before! Also I have not been on foreign assignment for a TeoG project! These problems got solved by the many nice people who agreed to support me. First of all there are the Ghanaian TeoG members who will bring their experience to the project to make the workshops successful. Second, there are Annika and Timo who agreed to take me with them to join their project, in which they support the maintenance team of the hopitals in Techiman, Agroyesum and Agomanya. With this initual situation, the journey could start.

So the three of us met yesterday at 8:15am at the airport in Nurenberg. After waking up at 5 am, I was noticing our day of waiting, flying, sitting and again waiting just in a “stand by mode”. After our stopover Amsterdam we safely arrived in Accra yesterday evening. It should take several additional hours to get our luggage, get through the passport controll and finally get some Ghanaian Cedis and a local phone card. Outside the airport we were very happy to see the Ghanaian guy Chris who picked us up and brought us to his hostel. Of course he shoued us the taste of Ghanaian beer. It was a very funny evening!

But our journey was not over yet. This morning Chris made rice with fish for us and we had the oppurtunity of starting to get used to spicy African food. Although we Germans are not used to eat that spicy for breakfast we enjoyed it and were very happy to be prepared for the second day of travelling. Picked up from a driver sent from the holy family hospital in Techiman we feched our tool box and drove the six hours to Techiman were we still had enough time to move into our rooms, have a rest, make dinner (egg with bread), make our documentation and plan for the following days. Now it´s 9pm and still 28 degrees outside. We are a bit exhausted from the travelling days, but on the other hand we are very motivated to start our work tomorrow and I am excited about which experiences I will make in the next days.
