Health education on menstrual hygiene at Henekrom Basic School
About the Project
On 30th June 2026, a health education session on menstrual hygiene was conducted for adolescent girls at Henekrom Basic School, located in Henekrom, a small village in the Sunyani Municipality. The purpose of the programme was to educate approximately 80 girls on proper menstrual hygiene practices, dispel common misconceptions about menstruation, and promote healthy menstrual hygiene management.
The objectives of the health education were to:
• Educate adolescent girls on menstruation and menstrual hygiene.
• Explain the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene during menstruation.
• Demonstrate the correct use and disposal of disposable sanitary pads.
• Encourage healthy menstrual hygiene practices to prevent infections.
• Support the girls by providing disposable sanitary pads.
The session began with an introduction of Technology Without Borders as an NGO. Fellowed by what menstruation is, explaining that it is a normal physiological process experienced by girls and women of reproductive age. The adolescent girls were educated on the importance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene by bathing regularly, changing sanitary pads every 4–6 hours or whenever they become soaked, washing their hands before and after changing pads, wearing clean underwear, and disposing of used sanitary pads safely in a covered bin.The girls were also encouraged to eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and seek medical attention if they experienced unusually heavy menstrual bleeding, severe pain, foul-smelling discharge, or irregular menstrual cycles that caused concern. Throughout the session, participants were encouraged to ask questions, and their concerns were addressed. At the end of the health education, 240 sanitary pads were distributed to all the adolescent girls to support them in practicing good menstrual hygiene.
The health education programme was successfully conducted. The adolescent girls actively participated in the discussions, asked questions, and demonstrated an improved understanding of menstrual hygiene practices. The distribution of sanitary pads was warmly appreciated and is expected to encourage better menstrual hygiene management among the beneficiaries. For the future, our aim is to organize similar educational programmes regularly in schools to promote menstrual health, reduce stigma surrounding menstruation, and improve school attendance and the overall well-being of adolescent girls.
