Growing a Greener Future in Siaya County, Kenya
In rural areas of Kenya, trees are often cut down for firewood, contributing to soil erosion, reduced water retention and the loss of habitats for birds, insects and other wildlife. Our project in Siaya County aims to counteract these effects by planting trees on communal grounds, particularly at schools, while raising awareness of environmental protection and climate change.
Together with our local partner Stawisha Africa, we are empowering young people to become active environmental stewards. The project builds on several previous initiatives and the tree nursery established at Stawisha Africa during project KEN_05.
The original goal was to plant 400 trees. Thanks to strong cooperation with partner schools and additional support, the initiative has grown far beyond this target. Since April 2026, more than 2,000 trees have already been planted.
Students from six schools have participated in environmental workshops covering climate change, sustainable waste management, food security and the links between environmental protection and community well-being. The students also actively participate in planting and caring for the trees, supported by a local gardener.
By combining tree planting, environmental education and youth participation, the project aims to create lasting benefits for both the environment and local communities. Young people are taking the lead in creating greener schools and contributing to a more sustainable future.
